Bel Air CPAs make time during busy season to work with Edgewood High Academy of Finance student.
Bel Air, MD, February 24, 2011: It’s busy season at Weyrich, Cronin & Sorra (WC&S) - Certified Public Accountants & Business Consultants, but the employees of the firm always find time for Christina Davenport, a senior at Edgewood High School and part of the Academy of Finance program. Janet Gomes, CPA and Manager at WC&S is instrumental in fostering the relationship with the Academy of Finance. As a member of the Academy of Finance board, Janet feels strongly about the college-preparatory program, which is a partnership between Harford County's financial services industry and the Harford County Public Schools. “It’s important for us to make a positive impact in the future of these bright young people,” said Gomes, “It’s another way for our firm to be involved in the community and really make a difference.”
Before being introduced to the Academy of Finance, Christina had no idea of what her passion or career goals were. After attending a seminar at the end of her freshman year and learning about the program, she knew that this was an opportunity that she couldn’t pass up. She joined the program and completed her first Academy of Finance class, Introduction to Business, during her sophomore year. After completing the class, Christina realized that her math, technological, and analytical abilities tied into the concept of business and accounting and that a career in finance was for her!
Every member of the Academy of Finance is required to be an active member of a nationwide extracurricular program known as FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) so Christina became involved, serving as the chair of the advertising committee during her sophomore year, treasurer during her junior year, and as the FBLA president currently during her senior year. “The Academy of Finance has not only expanded my knowledge of business and accounting, but has taught me soft skills like how to dress professionally, how to give presentations, and much more,” said Davenport. This has all paid off and she is currently participating in a paid internship at WC&S.
“Christina came to WC&S last year to job shadow and we fell in love with her!” said Janet Gomes, “We are excited to have her with us this year as in intern.” Since her internship is during tax season, it gives Christina a more in depth experience on the everyday life of an accountant. Even though everyone is busy at the firm, all of the CPAs take time to sit with Christina on a daily basis and share their knowledge.
“Out of all the decisions that I’ve ever made concerning my academic career, choosing the Academy of Finance was the best one.” Davenport said. “When in school, the Academy of Finance and FBLA has almost always been tied in with me when my name is brought up. It is a reputation that I will always be proud to carry with me.”
